Fear No Music 2008-2009 Season:
Parallaxis: Music and Moving Pictures
A live concert of 20th/21st-century classical music performed with accompanying video — in the style of a silent-movie.
April 17, 2009 at 8:00 P.M.
ATTENTION: Venue changed to Colonial Heights Presbyterian Church
2828 SE Stephens Street, Portland, OR 97214
Greek for "a change," parallaxis gives rise to parallax, denoting the apparent change in an object viewed from different positions. Here, the positions are metaphorical: music and motion pictures as complementary angles. Curated in collaboration with Portland media studio Helsinqi, this concert pairs works by contemporary composers and film/video artists. Putting these media on equal footing — like two halves of a holographic plate — frees them from habits of accompaniment or illustration. Each changes the other, generating syntheses more unexpected than the sum of their parts.
Presented by fEARnoMusic and video curators Leo and Anna Daedalus of HELSINQI media studio.

Hear the latest works from the startlingly creative minds of the Young Composers Project, the Messiaens and Towers of tomorrow, right here, today!
Currently sponsored by the Herbert Templeton Foundation, this innovative program gathers young composers (grades 6-12) from around Oregon for workshops over a nine-month period. During the workshops, the student composers develop their compositional ideas, experiment with orchestration, and have their works professionally performed and recorded. Since its inception in 1997, the project has resulted in composition winners at regional and national levels. Many of our young composers have gone on to further study and the beginnings of illustrious careers. You can't miss it!

As we prepare to honor Oregon's 150th anniversary of statehood, we will participate in this historic event in our "fear no music" way by adding a fresh, musical twist to the excitement, festivities and pride associated with the anniversary. Join Fear No Music for the world premieres of three new works, written especially for this grand occasion, plus two new choreographies by Agnieszka Laska and Paul Drestrooper. Hear supernatural sounds created by composer Bonnie Miksch, Professor of Composition at Portland State University; experience acoustical journeys by the daring Robert Kyr; explore new sounds by Robert Priest, Artistic Director of Marzena; and revel in the ballet version of "Jilted" by Robert McBride and "Mama's Song" by Jack Gabel. We are excited to collaborate with the Agnieszka Laska Dancers and Gavin Larsen, a lead dancer for the Oregon Ballet Theater, moving to the music of Tomas Svoboda, Jack Gabel, and Robert McBride. Also, featuring great works by John Peel, David Schiff and Ryan Francis. This concert is part of a regional tour that includes performances in Portland, Eugene and Salem.
This project is supported in part by a grant from the Oregon Cultural Trust, investing in Oregon's arts, humanities and heritage, and presented as partners of Oregon 150. The concert in Portland is supported in part by a grant from RACC and Work for Art.

Olivier Messiaen |
Fear No Music founder Jeffrey Payne presents a complete performance of Messiaen's Vingt Regards sur l'Enfant-Jésus (Twenty Gazes/Contemplations on the Infant Jesus), one of the grandest conceptions in the piano literature, and the summit of Messiaen's keyboard writing. These contemplations are at once tender and almost brutal, finally triumphant in the powerful apotheosis of the cyclical themes. Composed in 1944 in Paris for Yvonne Loriod, during terribly troubled times, the piece initially received a mixed critical reception. Though it is now recognized as one of the most important piano works of the twentieth century, complete performances of Vingt Regards are still rare.
Tickets at the door: $20 general admission; $15 Seniors; $5 students. Children under 13, free.
