Hearing The Future 2015
April 26, 2015 at 2:30 pm
Young composers, age 9 through 18 will experience later this month what many music aficionados simply dream about—a professional performance of their works. Fear No Music at 2:30 PM Sunday, April 26 will perform pieces by young composers in the “Hearing the Future” concert in the Chapel at Reed College.
The Young Composers program is the only program of its kind in the country. Students from all over the United States hand-picked for the program by their music teachers, work with Payne and his musicians in a yearlong series of workshops. Over the course of nine months, the young composers shape a full-blown musical score, as professional musicians help them explore with instruments, including the flute, clarinet, saxophone, viola, cello, and piano. “These students express fresh and exciting musical ideas,” said Payne. “As musicians, we are the vehicle for their creative expression. Our goal is to develop the composers of the future.” This year’s program includes pieces influenced by jazz, dub-step, classical and film music.
Former Young Composers participants have earned many national, state and regional awards for their compositions. Some of this year’s participants were winners at the state, regional and national levels of the Music Teacher’s National Association competition.
Tickets are $25, $10 for students/senior citizens. Tickets are available at the door.
