CHURCH plus White HINTERLAND and FEAR NO MUSIC
October 16, 2009 at 8:00 pm
Come see Fear No Music’s debut at Mississipi Studios, with Church and White Hinterlands.
CHURCH’S lush aesthetic is a lovely contradiction of sounds: expansive and cohesive, experimental yet familiar, brooding one moment and soothing the next. Their unique, mostly analog instrumentation unites factions of noise-rock with psychedelic folk and experimental pop. “The best, most unfuckwithable, avant-pop I’ve heard…my default jam of the month. One of Portland’s finest indie outfits.” (Portland Mercury). The buzz around these parts is that they are gonna rate as one of Portland’s best new bands come 2010. Just watch. But come see them now while they are in the percolationally awesome phase. WHITE HINTERLAND’S Phylactery Factory is one of the most vibrant and breezy records of 2008; traipsing somewhere between the lilting morphine folk of Jolie Holland and the classically-tinged mythology of Joanna Newsome, all while maintaining a steady jazz heartbeat. It is the brainchild of the young and talented CASEY DIENEL, whose voice flutters like a songbird atop luxuriant experimental aural scenery. We loves her. Portland’s FEAR NO MUSIC has consistently pushed the limits of chamber music, performing works that have united them with a taiko ensemble, the zheng, the shakuhachi, the theremin, electronics, multi-media videos and more. The group has worked to foster new audiences by regularly joining with local artists and collaborating with different genres. Tonight’s show launches a short tour for Church – come support and steep in their charming sonic glory!
